“Better the tail of a lion than the nose of a fox.” – Rabbi Daniel Lapin, Thou Shall Prosper
Donors entrust their money to ethical people and organizations, not to “foxes”. Let’s talk about how your nonprofit can connect with your community’s own lions.
Long before COVID-19, I met a man on a commuter flight who was traveling to the annual meeting of a national nonprofit board he served. As we talked, he told me he had also helped start a technologies-focused high school. I briefly described my challenges of introducing a new nonprofit school to my community. He recommended four things:
- Join Rotary
- Participate in the local Chamber of Commerce Leadership program
- Read Kouzes and Posner’s Encouraging the heart
- Speak about the new organization at service clubs, like Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions.
For just one hour, on a sunny commuter flight, I had caught the tail of a lion.
I discovered over time, as I took these 4 steps, that he had handed me the keys to the city! He understood that our organization’s reputation in the local business community would be built by the personal recommendations of those who know us.
