I often receive requests for grant writing; sometimes the funding need is critical. If your nonprofit needs funds right now, run a campaign. Here’s a quick overview of what to do.
1.) Send a letter to everyone who cares, or may care, about the success of your NPO asking for a appointment to talk with them about your cause.
2.) Include your budget in the letter and the reason you need funds right now.
3.) Follow up within a week asking for the meeting. Most people won’t want to meet and will send you a donation because you asked.
4.) Thank everyone that responds in any way.
You can complete a campaign in just a few weeks. I know of one campaign that was completed in 6 weeks, asking 90 prospective donors, that met its $35,000 goal. There is much more to learn about campaign fundraising, but this article gets you started. Contact me or visit my blog for more details.
The Grant writing process is much slower and results are unpredictable. You may write a few grant proposals before you get any funding. Or, you may be awarded the first grant you request. And, the grant review process often take 3 to 6 months. Grants can provide a lot of money, sometimes all at once. Look at grant writing is a “long game”. It’s about relationship building with foundations and sometimes repeat applications. Happily, once a foundation approves your grant, they often fund your cause for several years.
